the gentlemen follows american expat mickey pearson (matthew mcconaughey) who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in london. when the story goes that he wants to leave the business, mickey faces conspiracies, intrigue, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to take everything away from him.
mickey pearson (matthew mcconaughey) is considering getting rid of his marijuana empire, while still looking for the right buyer to make the transition. with enough interest in his trade, there are more hijackers who want to take advantage of it. the story that follows is entertaining, atmospheric and refreshing. guy ritchie once again shows his lock, stock formula in a mature, grown-up approach. this is a version that you can appeal to or will repel. don't expect a raw film, but more subtly refined. it's only the cinematography that is reminiscent of his signature films.
the gentlemen kicks off with a way that immediately sends the viewer in a direction. the choice of storytelling works well, but the storylines are sometimes a bit confused or messy intertwined. yet the film is very limited by this, mainly due to the speed of the film.
the film draws heavily on the charisma of matthew mcconaughey, where his strength is also his weakness because he is used in a repetitive way. the rawness, which characterizes his first films, is missing, which does not make the film a lesser film. in many ways guy ritchie has matured as a director and retains his distinctive style with a great sense of cinematography and a fine soundtrack.
