The Red Shoes

another hailed classic and another slight disappointment but the real reason here might be me not being the targeted audience. the use of colors and production level for 1948 is unreal and quite remarkable, the choreography and set designs were excellent too but the plot felt a bit flat. i knew the movie was about a ballet dancer but wasnt expecting so much ballet which wasnt exactly a bad thing but it made it quite longer then it needed to be. the biggest problem for me was its poor pacing and character development but overall it was a fun experience and i will surely revisit this in the read more

i love going into a film blind. it doesn't happen much with newer releases but with older films it does and almost always when i watch a criterion disc. the red shoes is a great example of this. literally all i knew about this was that it was directed by the same guy who directed peeping tom which is fantastic. that's it. so i knew nothing. and what a ride i went on. funny, thrilling, scary, tragic. this is a must see. it takes ballet on film to new heights melding the two forms into something very unique and i didn't know they could do the things they do here with effects all the way back in... read more
