NOTE: I've only watched the theatrical cut. I need to watch the Ultimate Cut. And should also read the comics.

I'm betting much of the due credit goes to the source material, however I'm ignorant to it, so can only comment on the movie as a whole.

This movie is fantastic. It's able to turn superhero stereotypes and tropes upside down in an artful and relevant manner. The use of Byronic anti-heroes - flawed and gray - as opposed to romantic heroes - idealistic and divine - makes it more realistic and also brings characters to life.
It's filled with great scenes, witty and memorable dialogues, and portrays several difficult subjects; with a storyline that touches the afflictions of humanity at the personal and collective levels.
With its dark themes, and sometimes dark humour, it's masterfully directed and a treat to the eyes and ears (due to the smart selection of tracks). I especially liked the artistic intro which condenses years of history of an alternate universe where some historic events took a different turn, and sets up the context for the movie.
However this movie is not flawless, as it does have some warts, even if small, and that could be easily avoided.

One of the interesting themes captured was the passage of time: on how an ungrateful and selfish society is able to chew and spit those characters who no longer serve a purpose.
Or the need for a common enemy, since humanity can never stop exerting violence and hate, it always needs a target.
Also can't go without saying just how cool Dr. Manhattan is. The imagery of the scene where he's working on the reactor is pretty damn cool.

I happened to come across a comment thread at
which makes an acute observation and I quote:
"""
Essentially, these are what each character represents:
- Rorschach is a dentologist. He strives for truth and his perception of what is good. Cares about the weak
- Ozymandias is a utilitarian. For him the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Cares about the greater good
- Dr Manhattan is a materialist nihilist. He believes nothing has meaning and bases everything on pure logic and science. Is mostly detached
- The Comedian is an absurdist nihilist. He too believes nothing has meaning, the difference between him and Manhattan is he gives in to his savage nature. Cares about nothing but himself
- Nite Owl is a humanist. He sees the good in others and believes humanity may be worth saving. Cares mainly for his friends and the weak
- Silk Spectre is sexy? She has that crucial moment where she shows Manhattan the importance of life so there's that. Also she shows forgiveness
Watchmen is the most philosophically complex book I have ever read. While each character can be defined as each of those philosophies, all of them are taken to the extremes of each philosophy. And it has pictures. Take that Shakespeare

Surely Silk Spectre II is a humanist too; her whole discussion with Dr Manhattan was about the tragic plight of the everyday person (specifically her mother), and how that is worth saving. If anything she exhibits more of a protective and human nature than Nite Owl II does (although he'd certainly be a humanist in my eyes as well).
"""

And on why Watchmen is the best comic of all time:

HOLLIS MASON: Nixon, oh, that prick. To think I voted for that prick five times.
NIGHT OWL: Hey, it was him or the commies, right?

RORSCHACH: Attack on one is attack on all of us.

NIGHT OWL: Nobody knows who you are. You can give it up, try to have a normal life.
RORSCHACH: That what you have now? A normal life? When you walk down the street in a city dying of rabies... ...past the human cockroaches talking about their heroin and child pornography... ...do you really feel normal?
NIGHT OWL: At least I'm not the one still hiding behind a mask.
RORSCHACH: No. You're hiding in plain sight.

OZYMANDIAS: It doesn't take a political scientist to see, that our Cold War with the Russians isn't ideological... it's based upon fear. Fear of not having enough... But if we make resources infinite... ah... we make war obsolete.

SALLY JUPITER: Things change. What happened happened 40 years ago. I'm 67 years old. Every day, the future looks a little bit darker. But the past... even the grimy parts of it... keep on getting brighter.

DR MANHATTAN: She was pregnant and you gunned her down.
COMEDIAN: That's right... and you know what? You watched me. You could have turned the gun to steam, the bullets to mercury, the bottle into goddamn snowflakes, but you didn't, did you? You really don't give a damn about human beings. You're drifting out of touch, doc. God help us all.

PROSTITUTE: Fuck you! I make more in a week than you make in a year. You fucking homo!

RORSCHACH: I heard joke once. Man goes to doctor, says he's depressed. Life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in threatening world. Doctor says treatment is simple. "The great clown Pagliacci is in town. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. "But doctor," he says. "I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.

DR MANHATTAN: My father was a watchmaker. He abandoned it when Einstein discovered that time is relative. I would only agree that a symbolic clock is as nourishing to the intellect as a photograph of oxygen to a drowning man.
REPORTER: So you're saying there is no danger.
DR MANHATTAN: Even in a world without nuclear weapons, there would still be danger.

DR MANHATTAN: She says I am like a god now. I tell her I don't think there is a God. And if there is, I'm nothing like him. I tell her I still want her. And that I always will. As I lie to her, it is September 4th, 1970. I am in a room full of people wearing disguises. A very young girl looks at me and smiles. She's beautiful. After each long kiss, she plants a smaller, gentler one upon my lips, like a signature. Janey accuses me of chasing jailbait. She bursts into angry tears, asking if it's because she's getting older. It's true. She's aging more noticeably every day. While I am standing still. I prefer the stillness here. I am tired of Earth. These people. I'm tired of being caught in the tangle of their lives. They claim their labors are to build a heaven yet their heaven is populated with horrors. Perhaps the world is not made. Perhaps nothing is made. A clock without a craftsman. It's too late. Always has been. Always will be. Too late.

OZYMANDIAS: I guess you could say I've always been alone. They say I'm the smartest man in the world, but the truth is I've often felt stupid... ...at being unable to relate to anyone. Well, anyone living, that is. The only person with whom I felt kinship died 300 years before the birth of Christ. Alexander of Macedonia, or Alexander the Great, as you know him. His vision of a united world was... Well, it was unprecedented. I wanted... needed to match his accomplishments... so I resolved to apply antiquity's teachings to our world today. And so began my path to conquest. Conquest not of men... but of the evils that beset them.

RORSCHACH: None of you seem to understand. I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with me.

DR MANHATTAN: Why would I save a world I no longer have any stake in?
SILK SPECTRE: Then do it for me. If you really care.
DR MANHATTAN: When you left me, I left Earth. Does that not show you that I care? My red world here, now means more to me than your blue one.

SILK SPECTRE: Jon, please. You have to stop this. Everyone will die.
DR MANHATTAN: And the universe will not even notice. In my opinion, the existence of life is a highly overrated phenomenon. Just look around you. Mars gets along perfectly well without so much as a microorganism. Here, it's a constantly changing topographical map flowing and shifting around the pole in ripples 10,000 years wide.

DR MANHATTAN: Will you smile if I admit I was wrong?
SILK SPECTRE: About what?
DR MANHATTAN: Miracles. Events with astronomical odds of occurring like, oxygen turning into gold. I've longed to witness such an event, and yet I neglect that... in human coupling... millions upon millions of cells compete to create life, for generation after generation, until finally, your mother Ioves a man... Edward Blake, the Comedian, a man she has every reason to hate... and out of that contradiction, against unfathomable odds it's you... Only... ...you that emerged. To distill so specific a form... from all that chaos... is like turning air into gold. A miracle. And so... I was wrong.

OZYMANDIAS: You see, the Comedian was right. Humanity's savage nature will inevitably lead to global annihilation. So in order to save this planet I had to trick it with the greatest practical joke in human history.
RORSCHACH: Killing millions.
OZYMANDIAS: To save billions. A necessary crime.

NIXON: Since the attacks, I have been in constant contact with the premier of the U.S.S.R. Putting aside our past differences we have both pledged to unite against this common enemy. With the rest of the world we will prevail. This is a day we shall never forget. And yet we go forward to defend the human race and all that is good and just in our world. Thank you. God bless us all.

SILK SPECTRE: People's lives take them strange places. They do strange things and, well, sometimes they can't talk about them. I know how that is...

NEWSPAPER BOSS: Seymour, we got nothing to write about anymore. Everyone in the country, every country in the world are holding hands, and singing songs about peace and love. It's like living in a goddamn global hippie commune.
