probably the best ongoing-apocalypse movie? among stephen king movie adaptations, i enjoyed it more than the shining, so that's saying something. i'd recommend going into this blind. read more

after making the amazing and possibly best stephen king adaptation, the shawshank redemption, frank darabont went on to adapt the green mle, also by king. i found it to be a heavily loaded cheese and drivel sandwich. then he went overboard on the cheese and made the majestic (confession: i haven't seen it but i've heard). he seemed to be squandering his promise as a director. then he went and made the mist. and although it's no shawshank, it sure as hell is better than those other two movies. this movie is also based on a king work and like shawshank (and green mile) it is pretty faithful to... read more

i've watched this movie a good few times over the years and i must say its power hasn't diminished since its original release date 12 year ago. the gripping human drama at the centre of this horror story makes the movie - despite repeat viewings, i couldn't tear my eyes away from the action for the entire run time. and that ending! i think it's perfect but it triggered a 40+ minute argument with my bf who disagrees. he thinks it was unrealistic that the most resilient characters of the narrative would make it so far just to 'give up without exhausting all their options'. pfft! i say - there... read more

disguised as a monster movie, this film is really about exploring human psychology in extreme situations. but i shouldnt have to point this out because its constantly spelled out in the film. for instance, when some men foolishly try to risk their lives for something that doesnt even matter, a character immediately explains their behavior by saying, “out there in the market, they were scared and confused. in here, theres a problem they can solve, so theyre goddamn gonna solve it.” usually im all for films that explore the study of the mind, but not when everything is literally explained to me... read more

Following on from outstanding movies such as The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, Frank Darabont returns to direct another adaptation of a Stephen King novella with The Mist. It centres around the inhabitants of a town that is enveloped inside a strange mist that is filled with bloodthirsty alien lifeforms. Oh my lord. I was impressed. I thought the first act was strongest because we had no idea what was outside, if there even was something. But the character dynamics kept me engaged. Definitely gave me Darabont's era of The Walking Dead vibes. That ending, man. That was a huge gut-punch. That's what bumped my rating half a star up. read more

frank darabont doesnt miss. “On balance, it seems like, thematically, its a pretty good companion piece to Shawshank, in a weird way. Because if Shawshank is the movie about the value of hope, then The Mist becomes a movie about the danger of hopelessness.” this truly is the antithesis to the shawshank redemption. the few moments of human generosity are drowned out by this movies utter cruelty. i felt fucking awful during (almost) every death scene, and ESPECIALLY you-know-what. i also gotta recommend the black-and-white “directors cut” of this movie. even though i watched the color version... read more
