anytime a film attempts to process death and war through the eyes and the experiences of children, it runs the risk of becoming too over-sentimental. rene clemente avoids doing it in forbidden games and delivers a powerful and moving film about how war can affect the most fragile in society and how they cope with the horrors that they are confronted with on a daily basis. yet, what makes this film more powerful than some of the other films that do this is due to the restraint that the director shows. the fragility and the innocence of children serves as the extreme opposite to the brutality... read more

Left an orphan by WWII, a little girl is temporarily sheltered by a farmer's family. She and the youngest son start celebrating funerals to little animals until the grownups take notice of their activities. Masterful opening sequence underdramatizes the shock of losing both parents (and the house pet) and sensitive handling of the two kids coming to terms with the concept of death allow their scenes to find a miraculously unpreachy, natural tone. Extremely popular at its time, anti-war parable only gets sketchy in its depiction of the adult world. read more
