the hustler (1961) - one of the most excellent sports film ever made (8/10) a sports film that established narrative for all sports film to come for nearly half a century, the hustler is a film to revere. the hustler set the tone for every successful sports film made to this day (except only million dollar baby). there is an underdog protagonist, the protagonist goes through catharsis to rediscover himself, and beats the overwhelming odds to achieve something seemingly impossible. the fact that a film can have such a profound effect is telling of what a good film it is. robert rossen's best... read more

i kept going back and forth between liking this and thinking it's trying to earn its dramatic moments a bit too eagerly. the kind of feeling you get when characters seem to be acting a certain way because the script says so, not so much because it's a motivated (bad) choice. for a character piece i need some more fleshing out. 2h20 should've been plenty for that. everyone's pretty miserable and when they're not someone else is making sure they stay down. just because. far more than being "some movie about pool", it ended up being about the toxicity of gambling. this is basically proto-downer... read more
