Mission Impossible III is a dire movie. The script is nonsense of the highest order, the direction is more interested in trying to "shock" you or be "cool" than actually getting you emotionally invested. And yet, it's watchable, because Philip Seymour Hoffman, through sheer acting alone because god knows he has no material to work with, claws something great back. Many actors have given classic performances, and god knows PSH has given the world his fair share. But single handedly saving an Orci, Kurtzmann and Abrams movie from totally unwatchable garbage? a too long series of heist and action scenes strung together by bullshit, with a tacked on love story that culminates in utter ridiculousness. watchable, but could have been trimmed down instead of trying to pretend to be an actual dramatic story. at least he is married now, so the next movies are looking up. read more

the franchise challenge - mission impossible mission impossible 3: just as much as mi2 almost finished the franchise off, mi3 certainly rescued it. this is a sharp, action packed fun ride and the late hoffman is sublime davian. moynihan is an excellent addition as a character and actually helped cruise be a better ethan hunt. easily the best of the 1st 3 films which sent the mi franchise in the right direction - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read more

this blew me away in the theater. i was at the edge of my seat for most of the movie. what an amazing freshman movie from abrams and he took this opportunity to show us what he had in store for the future. the opening was a fantastic book and tone setter. yes it had too much shaky can but so did most things back then. it revitalized the franchise by adding genuine emotion and stakes instead of doves having sex onscreen. if it ended on the bridge it would have been much better. still dont know what bad robot was thinking with that last scene. read more

when philip seymour hoffman is your villain and only has like 10 minutes of screen time you better start the movie in the middle. good job jj. it's fascinating that abrams was handed the mission impossible franchise as his directorial debut but it obviously payed off big time. so much so that he was handed the keys to two more franchises much to the dismay of many star wars/trek super fans. read more

A superior entry in the hugely successful franchise born as a movie remake of Bruce Geller's signature TV series. While Ethan Hunt's third impossible mission is as convoluted and gimmicky as ever, throwing a newlywed wife (Monaghan) into the dangerous mix goes a long way in giving characters that extra layer that allows viewers to actually care for them. Pegg's carefully measured comic relief is another welcome addition to the enduring saga. read more

"humpty dumpty sat on a wall" i enjoy the variation of aesthetics and style between the first three movies very much. ive been playing Hitman, and this is the closest to a gameplay of the game (that is basically a spy game) in the series. read more

Far less interesting visually than the first two, and a return to sanity after Woo's bonkers affair. Ethan Hunt is now retired from field duty, training agents on the downlow and engaged to Julia (Michelle Monaghan). His star pupil's capture pulls him back into the field, where he gets caught up in IMFs manhunt of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's Owen Davian. Hoffman is fantastic as a ruthless kingpin, just a purely evil bastard without any kind of levity, but also gets to briefly play Tom Cruise in a PSH costume, and manages to make it feel like that's actually what is happening. This film was a game changer for what the franchise would become known for. Finally Tom Cruise gets to act Ethan as an emotional guy who has a personal life. That's what this installment of the franchise brings: Emotions. High personal stakes. J.J. Abrams' high paced editing also brings the endless action and non-stop thrills. It also has the visual feel of a 2000's blockbuster such as the earlier installments in Michael Bay's Transformers franchise.
