this really just didn't work for me. i couldn't really connect to the characters or sympathize with them. ada was dealt a shitty hand, but she never tried to make it work. after her husband initially didn't realize the importance of the piano to her, she never makes an attempt to emphasize it. he probably would have gotten it for her if he understood how important it was, but she never tried to explain it to him. he actually was a pretty compassionate and caring husband considering the situation and era. anna paquin is excellent and gives one of the best child acting performances i have seen.... read more

what i knew about this before watching: supposed to be an incredibly sexy, erotic movie featuring a mute woman. it was a period piece in the early '90s, meaning it was like every other movie. you saw harvey keitel's junk. while all these things are true, i'm older and more mature (hopefully) now and was interested in this more for the filmmaking. there's a lot on display. i don't know, was this the first hollywood film to show the glorious and terrible beauty of wild new zealand? it's also got a passionate and sweeping piano score (played by hunter herself!) that inexplicably wasn't nominated... read more
