so far, this is the only james cameron movie that i've watched which i can stand. almost all his negative tropes are here, however, there's some atrocious dialogue, broadly drawn characters and he lights in a way that extenuates the fakeness of the sets, drawing you out of the film. however, this is the only cameron film i've seen that is aware of this, and just lets itself be a shlocky b-movie with excellent tension. it's only around 100 minutes, the core idea is strong, memorable and the good kind of silly, and doesn't strive for some unearned epic and sentimental importance. read more

80's action films don't get more classic than this. in fact, give or take one or two other films (namely die hard and predator off the top of my head) 80's action films don't get much better than this. here is a movie that made arnold a star and made james cameron a film to be reckoned with. here is a movie that is tightly plotted, tightly edited, very well shot, very well written and pretty much, considering it's budget, is perfect. i can tell you that all these years later it is mainly the acting that could use a bit of work and that the eye removal scene/arnold mask is just awful. read more

such a great movie. full stop. arnold schwarzenegger could've had as much success in his career being a villain as he did as a hero. he could've been up there with gary oldman and willem dafoe. he has a terrifying onscreen presence and it's clear to see why the terminator became such a hit. read more

version rewatched: the adm extended edition fanedit (8 minutes of deleted scenes reintegrated into the film) 2-minute review: it's fashionable for a lot of people nowadays to cite terminator 2 as a sequel that's better than the original, but i think that has more to do with the age of most people writing about films online. they grew up with t-2 and had to purposely seek out the original, which seemed like a really old movie to them. i'm here to tell you that on a rewatch, it not only holds up, but it's a superior film! the terminator is less of a fun action movie than it is a sci-fi film read more

Is there a better person to play a cyborg than Arnold? For this movie he was a massively built oak tree of a man. His strange accent makes for a perfect callous robotic sounding killing machine. It's almost like his voice is a computer read out ( which I guess it is in one sense ). Terminator is one of those films that started something huge. People didn't realize it at the time, but the careers of Arnold, Cameron and perhaps even guys like Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen and even Bill Paxton were substantially started because of this film. I didn't expect this to be as slasher-movie-like as it was, but I liked it! Really builds the tension and delivers on the action sequences, special effects hold up pretty well except for bits of the final battle (one green-screen shot really looks terrible), and I'm pumped to watch T2 now. read more
