the last time i'd seen this was december 2002 on the first date with the lady who is now my wife. it amazes me just how beautifully made these films are. the care and attention just explodes out the screen at you. i guess i could recommend this as a first date movie :) read

EXTENDED EDITION
The high point in this isn't Helm's Deep, it's the relationship between Frodo and Gollum, and Frodo's sympathy for Gollum and how it manifests. It's by far the smartest writing of the trilogy of films, and unfortunately only takes up a small portion.
The rest for me was ups and downs, like why does the film stop for 20 minutes to go into Aragorn's love triangle? Why have we had zero character development between these three characters? (Seriously, there aren't actually any character beats between Aragorn/Gimli/Legolas, they're just best buds at the end of Fellowship read

the worst of the three lord of the rings films and it's nowhere near bad. picking up right where the last one left off and taking you on a whirlwind 3 plus hour ride the two towers is a great middle to the other two parts. gollum is a revelation, the cg work fantastic and serkis' performance just as marvellous. in fact everything about this film is great. it's hard to find faults but if i had to here are two of them: 1. if you haven't seen the first one you might be lost 2. a bit to much cutting around the characters (maybe?) 95/100 read

lotr the two towers extended version, first watch. as i had found the first lotr a watchable, unremarkable adaptation of a novel i enjoyed, but wasn't a fan of, i never got around to watching the other movies in the trilogy when they first came out. i mildly regretted this when i only managed to find the extended version. clocking at 4 hours, it was way more time than i was willing to spend. but i kept seeing the movies on a ton of "top whatever" lists, and each time i gritted my teeth, until i caved in and started on two towers, fully prepared to take 2-3 days to finish it. i actually read

this is probably my favorite of the trilogy because not only does it have the amazing helms deep sequence, but it also avoids the burden of really having to begin or end the story. what i noticed this time is how well paced the battle of helms deep is. the timing of the cuts to the ents prevents the action at helms deep from being overwhelming, which is key when you have a half-hour action set-piece. watched as part of scavenger hunt 46 task #30: watch a trilogy my list | caleb_yells's master list read

the middle chapter of the epic lord of the rings trilogy continues the adventure with huge battles and fantastical creatures. as the principal cast is split up, the audience is taken through a myriad of different locations. once again, visually impressive with great performances. read

the two towers sadly has the same issue that befalls so many middle parts of a trilogy: it mostly serves as a connecting piece between the introduction and the finale. granted, it's some incredibly well done connecting, but it is noticeable. and then you have the two-sided coin of a problem of gimli's descent into comic relief and legolas' increasingly over the top "good at everything"-ness. i don't know if this is a common thing to get annoyed by but it really bothered me. and my last issue is with some of the compositing, especially when it comes to greenscreen composites on wide shots and... read

Much meatier and more epic and sprawling than Fellowship but also owes much of it's emotional weight to the first movie's setup. As middle movies go, this one does such a seemless job of raising the stakes from the first movie whilst working as a setup for the finale, all whilst being an amazing self-contained epic all by itself. I don't think I can definitively "rank" these movies but I think while Fellowship might be the ultimate "sick day" movie, this one might be a greater feat of actual filmmaking. Plus we finally get to meet Gollum who is perhaps one of the pinnacles of early 2000s CGI... read

Such a masterpiece.
Different of the first one, this extended cut make some really great improvements. And Im not saying that Fellowships extended cut is not good – it remains perfect to me –, but here, the extension its more than a simple fan-service.
Fellowships extended cut sacrifices some good dynamics and rhythm to include a bunch of references and jokes, which actually doesnt have a big impact, in narrative therms. There are some good points, as Galadriel gifts, sure. But the extended scenes in The Two Towers, in general, are more significantly, with a great job in character read

It's like in the great stories, Mister Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How can the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened?
But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it'll shine out the clearer.
Those are the stories that stay with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think Mister Frodo, I do understand. I know now.... read
