The movie was based on a unique concept, but unfortunately, the execution was not up to the mark.

Despite having a fabulous concept, a great cast, and a generous budget, the filmmakers failed to deliver a good movie. The film is not necessarily bad, but it's not good either. With romance, drama, and sci-fi all mixed up, it isn't easy to enjoy any of it. Every time something comes up, the scene forgets the situation and continues with what's going on. Although the actors did a great job, they were stranded on a sinking ship. While the individual scenes are good, they don't work together cohesively. In all honesty, it's just an okay movie.

quick hits: passengers is equal parts i am legend, the martian and overboard - and yes, by the latter i mean the 1980s comedy with goldie hawn and kurt russell. but in this one there isn't any humor about the situation and chris pratt -- playing the kurt russell character -- is a nice guy protagonist who apparently we should really forgive for his unconscionable action, because he really feels bad about it, you know. chris pratt does his best to make his creepy character work, and he has chemistry with jennifer lawrence but it just doesn't smooth over those sharp points. meanwhile, the... read more

it is visually stunning, but narratively, it it underwhelming. it takes forever to get to the meat of the plot, and then it dives into contrived tension for a few minutes and then it is done. a story that explored his moral conundrum and the ensuing ethical dilemma would be a lot better than what they did. pratt and lawrence were bland, but okay. they are talented actors, but the aren't given enough to work with. fishburne is barely in this, and andy garcia had maybe 5 seconds of screentime. at least michael sheen brought a little personality. the visuals and score were great, but nothing read more

the main issue i have with this movie is that it's supposed to be about earth colonizing other planets, which is a way more interesting plot line. instead, it's a dramatic romance with a not at all humorous chris pratt and a pretty skanky jennifer lawrence (to be fair, both of them were). it was a cool idea, but it could have been so much better. read more

mild spoilers for each of the films i talk about: a large part of this film is a loving homage to the shining, and it has every right to win over even a skeptical film fan. the movie is ostensibly about a man who dreams of a brighter future and earnestly wants to work towards it. but an isolated and isolating setting gradually drains his willpower and starts making him make questionable decisions. both men sit at the same bar, asking questions to the same classic barman who mostly cannot give him the answers he wants. eventually his weakness leads him to directly endanger the life of a woman... read more

My quick rating - 6;8/10. This is just such a really well made movie. Performances by Pratt and Lawrence are very well done. I would've rated it even higher if it wasn't so darn predictable. Beyond that; the visuals look great even if they are not the centerpiece of the film. I really enjoyed how this was also able to insert just enough sci-fi action into the interstellar love story to keep viewers with a change of pace from within the same flick.
