on my second viewing i found the movie to be pretty much the same as last time but a little more lacking. it was no lord of the rings and in the long run, this series could of been two movies instead of three. you can feel it mostly in the first one, not very much in the second one and somewhat in this one. as a trilogy it's too long but as a single film this film somewhat brisks by. the make-up and costumes are a little under or over done depending on the character and there isn't enough variety to distinguish one player from another. but still there is enough action and carnage and epic read more

Most of the second half of this movie is utterly retarded. I was prepared to give it a 1.5, but the final twenty minutes contained some reflective moments that I found emotional. In particular the scene where Gandalf sits down next to Bilbo, smokes a pipe after the battle and they share a smile. There is a certain stoicism in this, which, I suppose, Gandalf teaches Bilbo. And it enriches both their characters in the original trilogy. I will maintain that Martin Freeman's Bilbo is the best character across the whole saga and is the best thing about this trilogy in particular. He absolutely... read more

My biggest issue with this trilogy is the over-use of CGI. I have a hard time believing what's actually happening on screen when there are shots that are 90% VFX that has aged poorly read more
