i certainly had my doubts about this film. my doubts increased further with talks of reshoots and lindelof getting involved. therefore i'm pleasantly surprised it wasn't a complete turkey. i'm amazed they still put "based on a novel by max brooks" in the beginning credits as it bore cock all resemblance to the book i read. admittedly, it's a long time since i read the book but i'm pretty sure it wasn't like this. i think there'd have definitely been a better reception if they hadn't used this title. i like the idea of a rabies like virus that causes people to swarm and bite. it's similar to... read more

World War Z is extremely hard to rate, mainly because of it's insane fucking production story. The film they set out to make was an action-adventure movie with (sic) "Balls-to-the-wall" thrills and nary a moment to catch breath. Needless to say, the first 2/3rds are paced terribly, no sense of build up, character and some of the worst dialogue and religious "references" you'll ever have the misfortune to come across. world war z provides momentary thrills with momentary dread set against an ugly use of cgi and a mess of a narrative that didn't seem to ever find the story that it wanted to tell in the first place. the problem with that type of momentary thrill and dread when set in a zombie movie is the overwhelming feeling of being too ephemeral and, ultimately, ineffective if you've seen any zombie movies before. zombies, by nature, make stories containing them much more geared to sustained tension, thrills, and dread because of the existential threat they pose to human beings. they approach that uncanny... read more

Exciting actioner has Brad Pitt bouncing all over the world to figure out a way to stop world-wide outbreak of flu transforming people into flesh-eating living dead. Loosely based on Max Brooks' novel, film zooms back on zombie pandemics and turns it into a disaster movie - succeeding in getting a PG-13 in the process. Stunning idea of the zombies climbing on each other to overcome walls is effectively limited to one shocking sequence. Quick, entertaining and ultimately smarter than expected. read more

Multiple viewings. The zombies are far too animated literally and figuratively. Still it moves fast and Pitt is likeable. The ending feels tacked on as everyone is aware of the behind the scenes issues. Part two will not be on this level (a cheap follow up by a lesser company) and at this rate will most likely be a do over, maybe closer to the book. It would have been interesting to see the David Finch sequel or even the DiCaprio version had his company won the bidding war. Why has there always got to be that one retard who can't cooperate quietly by stepping on or touching noisy shit? Why is there always that one hidden zombie who fucks up an entire evacuation, midway in progress? The average American zombie film always uses excessive amounts of firearms and it is making me sick. Not a single creative kill to be seen throughout the whole film. read more
