Potential wasted with sloppy writing and characters

This film really had potential. The overall story is good, the acting is generally good, and "good" characters are all well-realized. Where this film really falls apart is the "bad" characters, and the writers' inability to move the plot along without using the most contrived and unrealistic "bad" characters imaginable.

First there's the neighbor, who is completely out of control in every scene he appears in, reacting like an absolute lunatic every single time he's on screen.

Was wanting to see this for a while just never got around to. But I wish I had sooner. I wish I had seen it in theaters. It was fantastic as a whole. The story of it wasn't cheap or corny. And it didn't make me second guess anything. Normally with films like this it's hard to believe in it. But not here. I surely cannot wait for the sequel and may have to go watch the originals! read more

Looking for a cure for Alzheimer's disease, young scientist dramatically increases a chimpanzee's intelligence to the point that it becomes a leader of super-smart apes. Swift reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise wisely gives up any effort to outsmart the original film's shock ending and goes back to episode 4 ("Conquest of the Planet of the Apes", 1972) instead. Fans of the saga will appreciate references and in-jokes (including an imaginative reinvention of Charlton Heston's famous Stinking paws line) but newcomers won't be left out in the cold. I have been interested in checking these movies out for over a decade. I am not super familiar with Planet of the Apes other than knowing the twist and some random memes, but that's as far as it goes. I thought this movie was a pretty spectacular set up movie to what is gonna come out of it. The motion capture/effects of Caesar look just as good as if they made this now, there really wasn't anything that looked out of place or wrong.
