the first in the 3 part hobbit movie is a lot of fun and unsurprisingly it looks amazing. ian mckellan returns as gandolf and is fantastic as usual and martin freeman as bilbo is just wonderful. there are some wonderful moments here (bilbo's speech on why he came back, gandolf's speech on why he chose bilbo, gollum, the cave of orcs) but then there is also some moments that were unnecessary or overlong. an example of this would be the rock giant fight. what was the point of that scene? it didn't play into the story and it was very very unbelievable. there is a lot of extra padding (most of it... read more

i'd heard/read the reviews. too long was the general consensus. i'm inclined to agree. i could happily have lost some of the early shire scenes and got straight to the journey. with that in mind; i really enjoyed myself and was in awe at the spectacle playing out in front of me. it took me quite a while to get used to 48fps but i eventually did, until i realised that i'd got used to it at which point it seemed strange again. without comparing it to a 24fps version i can't really give an opinion. the film did look beautiful though. read more

the hobbit films were almost primed to fail right out of the gate. this is not to say that the films do not have the right talent behind them; far from it. but there was already one strike against them considering how highly-regarded the lord of the rings trilogy is in that it set expectations incredibly high for the follow-up. the series of calamities that followed--mgm's bankruptcy, lawsuits by the tolkiens against new line for profits from the first trilogy, guillermo del toro signing on and eventually departing the project when it seemed near-dead, a pre-production dispute with read more

this sauron guy seems to be real trouble! hope he doesn't make a return or anything... at least gandalf will be ready if he does and certainly won't forget about it or anything! i mean you wouldn't write a subplot stretched across 3 movies that is meant to set up an already existing trilogy that also contradicts said trilogy. especially if it has absolutely nothing to do with the story being told in this movie. right? oh my god is that cate blanchett and christoher lee????? read more

i really love the lord of rings, it's actors and story. i had never expected a good movie before if've seen the hobbit and this was exactly this what a saw at the end. a movie that is worthing the time you have to spend to see it. but nothing more. read more

Martın Freeman as Bilbo is easily my favorite character in the entire saga. If it wasn't for him, this movie could've been a piece of crap. I've never read Lord of the Rings, but I have read a little bit of the Hobbit, and I found it to be a quite silly and childish book. And this movie was accordingly sillier and more childish than the original trilogy, as well as thematically simpler.
