sitting in the theatre for the double bill (well having left between the two and now being back) of the independence day films i was pretty stoked. i had just see the first which i liked more than i remembered. now it was time for the new one. my god! i thought, this is ginna be good. the lights went down and the movie started; two hours or so later they came back on. everything in between the lights going off and on was terrible, and i mean terrible. this movie was perhaps the worst movie of the year and the worst movie i have seen in a long time. where to begin? should i start with the read more

when i was a kid i had these books, like technical manuals on the weapons, ships and aliens of the star wars universe. i had something similar about star trek. my favorite parts of independence day weren't exactly will smith's one liners, or all the explosions. as a kid, i always paid a little bit more attention whenever the movie would take us into the depths of the alien crafts, or showed the interiors of their fighter jets- so to speak. my point is, i love movies that explore alien civilizations. mix that with ridiculously jingoistic bravado and more explosions than you could shake a read more

My quick rating - 6;1/10. Of course could not live up to the original; but at least they made it believable on the continuity. If you liked the first one (which many don't; I really did though) then you will be just fine with this one. Something was missing though; and that was what Will Smith brought to the first one. There just was no stand out character to get behind. Hirsch and Goldblum played their parts well again. The action was frenetic and most likely looked really good in 3-D. Considering its been 20 years since the last movie perhaps it should of been longer. This movie has no real redeeming features and I can see why Will Smith didn't want to do it, he probably saw the writing on the wall. Lots of people would of rushed to see this having been starved of a sequel for so long but I could see from the trailer it looked rubbish and I was right. Twenty years after Roland Emmerich's 1996 blockbuster, the aliens are back and this time they bring even bigger vessels with advanced capabilities capable of nuking our planet from orbit. Unfortunately, this also marks a return of cliched stereotypes and cardboard characters which are much less acceptable today than they were back when the original was released. This is a road well trodden and were it not for the remarkable battle with the alien queen near its finale there would be little to recommend here. read more
