I legitimately forgot to breathe for a moment when Tom Cruise did the highly marketed bike jump off a cliff, the music finally kicked back in when I realized I was holding my breath - that's good stuff. Hard to pinpoint how I feel about this one seeing as it's just one half of a 2 parter but a real good time at the movies and the most a M:I film has felt like a spy thriller since the early entries. The paranoia in this one is through the roof, almost matching the levels in the De Palma original. Firstly, I have only seen two mission impossible films. One back in the late 2000s and I can't remember which it was, but they made fake augmented rooms, and mission impossible 1 just last year. This is the John Wick: Chapter 4 of the Mission Impossible franchise. A fantastic 3-hour ride. This had the most engaging storyline of all the films imo and a great balance of action and comedy. This was actually funny and most of the jokes landed. The stunts was great. The cast was great. It's awesome to see the chemistry between Luther and Benji shine. Something we haven't gotten beforehand. Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff were great additions to the cast as well. Finally a movie I enjoyed recently. Starting to worry it was something wrong with me rather than the movies haha. Anyways -- This movie is the bread and butter of action films. It gives you exactly what you're looking for and delivers it perfectly. Nothing super unique or special about this movie, it's just done so very well. I loved it but...... I have some reservations. I felt the movie a bit incoherent at times, if that makes sense? compared to Fallout, that is. Performances were obviously good and especially the chemistry between Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise off the charts. The back and forth between them was almost always unexpected and a delight to watch. What the Tom Cruise detractors don't understand is that his belief in scientology was purely strategic: he somehow knew all those years ago that he'd need the dark magic from being a high-level member in order to force Hollywood to keep allowing him to make real action movies with real stunts in 2023, and even more to survive those at the ripe age of 61.
