its silly charms and well-crafted laughs all hinge on a fairly zany premise. yet, the premise isn't half as outlandish as the core conceit that a well-mannered guy from the 1960's rulebook of traditional masculinity is the ideal modern man- that he's got everything lacking in guys nowadays! it cherry picks so extremely all the nice things that'd come from the "good ol' days" that you wonder when the other shoe will drop. of course, it never really does. why? because brendan fraser is so gosh darn loveable that it never needs to. in fact, we'd be offended if it did.
there's a scene where he finally suggests that he and silverstone could live in his fallout shelter together with his mom and dad, and that's as far as it goes with the potential 'yikes' factor. fraser's adam only ever interfaces with then-modern society in ways that make the late 90's look like microwaved hell, and the 60's like the glory days of america. back when "good manners" and "politeness" were the standard.
a better movie would've engaged with some of the not-so-good aspects of society back then, and ratified them against the sincere progress culture has made in some significant regards. there would've been some sincerity and pathos to mine from that, and it would've paired nicely with what the movie already does well: gosh darn it, it makes me laugh.
but, this is about as absurd as encino man. don't expect anything more than that and you should be fine. the two films would make a delightfully silly double feature.
