man this is exciting. i am watching the filmography of tim burton and not only do i get to watch so many great films that i have wanted to see again for so many years but yesterday i got to watch pee wee's big adventure which i had always wanted to see and finally got to. i am so excited.
now beetlejuice is up and if i hadn't mentioned it already, i could not be more excited. i loved the movie as a kid (and the cartoon) and it has been way to long since i had seen it last. so i popped it into the player, got comfortable and began the film.
and right away it flooded back memories, right away i was in movie heaven, right away i was having a good time. a super young alec baldwin and a pretty, in her hey day, geena davis die and are stuck in their house. the alwys great (so sad) jeffery jones, an even younger than baldwin winona ryder and the always funny catherine o'hara move in and make their lives hell.
then their is michael keaton as beetlejuice. everyone here gives a great performance (maybe davis gives the least) but keaton gives the best. he is funny, scary, creepy, weird, strange but most importantly very funny. his timing, his nuances, his movements, his performance is just top notch.
but it's also the effects and production design that makes this movie awesome. it just looks amazing. sure some of the effects are a little dated but it only adds to the 80's charm this film exudes. it's inventive, it's balls to the wall crazy and it shows the genius that is tim burton in all his glory. the music too is just fantastic, especially the main legendary theme by danny elfman.
there is so much to love here. so much to be entertained. so much to enjoy. in it's brisk 90 minutes it throws images and ideas at you at a break neck pace. the ending does feel slightly rushed though and could of been stronger but even so beetlejuice is one crazy original messed up movie.
on a side note, there is no way in hell that this film, if made today, would get a pg rating. it's violent, scary, sexual, adult. oh the 80's...
