this is the first movie i've watched in maybe a year that i didn't pause or even look away from for the entirety of its runtime. i'm not sure if it's because i was dead tired (i started watching at 2:30 am...) with no energy to multitask, but i'd rather believe it speaks to the intensity and engaging quality of the movie that it gripped my attention the whole time. after all, when starting a movie so late, i typically pass out or quit after 15 minutes. lord of war demands your attention, and rewards it all the same.
it's a hip and stylish look at some very nasty business. it also has a fantastic cast, and a relentless energy that rarely falters. cage is pretty great here, and he shoulders the movie effortlessly, and the movie never aspires to portray him as any kind of hero. he's a gun runner, and the movie never tries to glaze over the nastier parts of what that entails. he's a pretty despicable person, but also pretty magnetic. it easily recalls the kind of can't-look-away-viewing that breaking bad is often applauded for.
lord of war probably would make a fantastic tv show, especially since the movie breezes through entire decades of the main character's life. i don't care if it's heavily fictionalized, i'm sure the movie already is- despite the closing claim that the movie is based on actual events. who knows? maybe i'll google it, maybe not. as a movie though, it's very engaging. its only real issues are some pacing issues around the middle. the movie gets kind of inert as it shuffles the plot along to get to the main thrust for the third act.
that aside, i do fully recommend lord of war.
