first time watching this film and i don't think there is much to add to what has been said lots of times, as a subject of both overwhelming praise and heated debate for decades. it's a memorable journey enhanced by spielberg's craft and the collective memory of nazi crimes which add a lot of gravity to this story. schindler's list, however, intends to transmit hope. hope and a genuine belief in humanity transcending the absolute worst side it has ever shown.
i don't blame spielberg for choosing this path, but i don't like the way he does it. yes, the movie is superbly-acted, it is well-directed, it has a wonderful soundtrack and it's effectively emotional when it wants to, but ultimately it doesn't feel sincere. and it doesn't because this reads as a monument to his own artistic ambition instead of a genuine attempt to empathize. the characters, the story, the way he frames and portrays violence, there this slight yet permanent feeling of condescendence. the gunshots are brutal and the camera lingers on the blood flowing through the snow because there is an audience the director expects to be entranced and horrified. the characters pronounce conveniently memorable phrases ("this list... is an absolute good. this list is life"... seriously?) because spielberg wants to perform.
the movie is good, don't get me wrong. it's ridiculously good, it's so carefully crafted, it has probably an actual noble intention behind. but when it becomes so obviously regurgitated by the desire to be recognized and praised, every trace of sincerity it could have is compromised, and ultimately negated by the lack of genuine empathy towards the tragedy and the suffering it portrays. and as a result schindler's list can be nothing more than a gorgeous, magnificent and effectively manipulative fake.
