sure the gross-out humor and exorbitant self-indulgence of the entire concept might compromise the movie's more genuine and straight-faced moments, but still. why him? is a movie revolving around an uptight dad, his young college-going daughter, and "the boyfriend". obviously the clueless boyfriend wants to propose to the daughter, aaaand the dad is having none of that. it's a well-worn idea in rom com history, but forget the chekov's gun in the form of a taxidermied moose encased in a few thousand gallons of piss- and instead focus on how the movie doesn't end with the girl saying yes to the proposal because she's not ready for it. so many of these movies have the male figures coming full circle to understand that the girl in their lives doesn't belong to either of them, only to have the girl fulfill both of their big hopes for her in the end. this movie actually sticks the landing and commits to the concept. it was never about her saying "yes". it was about this trio of flawed people learning to accept each other. granted, it's easy to lose sight of that when the movie leans hard into celebrity cameos (kiss, elon musk and more), literal toilet humor, and more testicle jokes than i could've possibly imagined. but i fucking laughed- a lot. sue me.
