that was sappy as all hell. that was as sweet as saccharine can get. really it was so emotionally string pulling it almost hurt. plus the script was god awful at times. for me a badly written scene that is so overtly schmaltzy is one of the worst sins in cinema.
but with that said a couple of things kept this movie afloat and made it bearable if not entertaining.
first would be that tim burton keeps it all together. not his best showing as director but see alice in wonderland for how bad he can get.
second would be colin farrell. even though his character development is non-existent and instead of an arc it's more of a switch with the snap of the fingers he is great to watch.
third is danny devito. enough said there.
lastly is eva green. she can do no wrong. she shows up any anything and is always the best part of the movie. same here. she's an enigmatic and illuminating presence and is always a joy to watch.
take those four things away and the movie would be unwatchable but with them they make this sickly sweet family tale better than it should of been and dare i say it: watchable...

No, this is not one of the worst sins in cinema. Many movies are even more sappy, sweet and schmaltzy - Pretty Woman, Shall We Dance, Supergirl, Little Mermaid (2018), A Dog's Purpose, Neverending Story, Frozen, Lion King, Green Mile, Wall-E. And also Forrest Gump, which is one of the most popular movies of all time. Yes, some people really like sweet and schmaltzy movies. Are they wrong? No, it is just a matter of taste. Some other people prefer action movies or horrors. I dont think that action and fright are superior to sweetness, or vice versa. The thing that makes the movie better (or worse) is something else, something bigger and deeper. For me, Dumbo movie makes sense and it has good visuals, and it represents a good alternative to animated version of Dumbo (that movie is also sweet and schmaltzy and i found it somehow "empty", if you know what i mean.)
