so much better than re3. it picks up after it, just to quickly dispense with pretty much everything (alice's powers, alice's clones, the safe haven town of arcadia, the people still alive at the end) and retain what i liked most about re3: badass alice and ali larter's claire.
the style here is definitely an improvement over re3 too, though that is probably subjective. there is a lot of slow motion, and the action scenes are a mix of the matrix (yeah, mostly this) and equilibrium. they are so good though. so good. ok, alice swinging like tarzan in a cheesy pose was not helped by being in slo-mo, but it usually worked and paid off. the water? the running? it was good. no shaky cam and quick, confusing editing ruining the choreography? yeah, it was all good.
there was plot and such. acting. people died. people were alive. stuff happened. (side note: just how much did they hate producers? i wonder what the behind the scenes stuff was.) it looked great though. i am rating the shit out of this because the axeman fight? yeah, this is the stuff action movies are made of! and then claire's shoulder bump at the end? such a tiny thing, but so perfect.
i've rewatched re 1, 2, and 3, and i'm pretty sure i will not watch them again. this one i might, because of alice and claire, and because there are enough good scenes to warrant a rewatch instead of youtube-ing the fight scenes. it might not seem like much of an endorsement, and i suppose it's not, but it's more than i can say about many action movies.
