lame. imagine watching an action movie and not getting... action out of it. like, there are almost no action scenes in the movie and that few is underwhelming, because it just a punch, similar to fighting in the street - it has no choreography whatsoever. you can't even understand power-levels. in the one scene, she beats tens of enemies with tied hand, in the next scene she can't beat even one of them and in the next scene, fury is beating them. ok. in the end, she will get two random power-ups (second one is unexplained asspull. it makes no sense) and demolish every threat in seconds. there is no edge to them, you are just seeing blowing ships. nothing else. it is not even on earth, to feel danger for anyone or anything. not to mention directing, which is just bland (fun fact: they are not action directors and they were working on some mini-tv series past 10 years). by the end of the day, captain basically won alone, without any injuries or other (long-term) consequences. bland, like anything else in the whole movie, which makes two hours of duration quite a chore to watch. i mean, in the first half, they are just trying to find out captain's true identity, which is very generic, dull and slow. only thing that encourages you to finish the movie, is the hit or miss comic relief and you will miss them in the second half, which, on it's own, is all about... nothing? they are just talking, walking, getting caught, punching and then movie ends, because there is no resolution to anything, so that bland build-up was not even paid-off in the climax. so, yeah, it's not a movie, it's just an excuse to asspull some powerful character in endgame, as this movie is just a filler. of course, writing is also underwhelming: -how did that woman make such technology on earth? -how did that went unnoticed by anyone and why was not even carol surprised? -why was that energy even absorbed in her? -how is she controlling that energy and where are negative effects? -how did skrull's take her body unnoticed, when her group was near? -why did kree's not take care of earth in that 6 years? at least, to cover their lies. ... and, well, you get the idea. themes? there are not any. captain's backstory was quite interesting at first, because it showed how society affects women by disencouraging them with their sex, but it was incredibly shallow, as it was there only for 5 seconds. not to talk about the setting, which just was your average earth, not connected to any of the races and their war... but if you want to analyse more subtle approach (which i doubt, because it is marvel, but alright). see, like people in her past, that race was also demanding from her to do what they wanted, and captain wanted to find herself, which was to not do what they want. also, it antagonised every such person. they all were villains. her powers also were held back until they unplug... reminds me of something... and what the hell was the scene, where little girl was ok to her mom's suicide mission. propaganda alert. unfortunately, comic relief was the only thing that was trying to make characters appealing, because otherwise they just were cardboards. altough, i must say, that the main heroine does have a personality (i liked her cockyness, but aside of that, she is pretty generic and nothing is presented as a flaw), but here is the thing - she has a backstory that is supposed to be justifying her personality, but as we see is it, she is an anti-thesis of that. they were just reacting to the conflict and that was it. well, expect for talos. he was the only light of this boredom, because he also was doing his best to save his race, while disliking the war and trying to not show it to children. bad guys justified their roles by being bad, so no interest on that side as well. in conclusion, captain marvel is completely boring, but at least not insulting. instead, you can go watch alita: battle angel, that movie is basically better in every possible way than this one.
