"Fathers and Daughters" is actually about just one and one: a Pulitzer-winning novelist and his little girl, whose lives have been shattered by the accidental death of his wife and her mother, first, and then by a couple of relatives determined to adopt the kid after Dad is forced to undergo some lenghty shock treatment. Although the screenplay is credited to Brad Desch, the film's themes are recognizably Muccinian: selfless parents, troubled familiar relationships, guilt trips and, hélas, an ever-present sense of self-justification. Melodramatic plot goes straight for the gut, with ridicule-defying villains but also credibly warm scenes between the leads and the youngest actors: there's enough narrative fuel to carry it through its 116' nicely paced running time (although shallow character development makes it feel more hasty than quick). Both Crowe and Seyfried give great performances, with an impressive supporting cast not being given much else to do but, well, supporting them.
