kingsman: the secret service is a film that i initially had some level of apprehension over. while everything looked good in early buzz, this adaptation of mark millar's the secret service comic book had a kick-ass feel, which can be a blessing and a curse. films with that sort of tone are very tricky to get right; you have to smooth out the edges between potentially jarring tonal differences and the ability to do so can make or break a film.
of course, the fact that matthew vaughn, who directed kick-ass, was helming this as well quelled some of that hesitation and it's safe to say that he delivered in a big way. there are obviously a lot of similarities between the two films -- the young protagonist, the bizarre moments, the violence, the crassness -- but each of these have their own twist in kingsman. vaughn deftly juggles the wackiness of the villains -- played in full-on scenery chewing mode by samuel l. jackson and sofia boutella -- and the emotional beats in eggsy's story.
taron edgerton had a star-making turn here in that role, supported ably by the likes of colin firth, mark strong, sophie cookson and michael caine. the action scenes are ridiculously entertaining and the over-the-top finale is absurdist in just the right way. as derivative as it might seem at times, kingsman delivered in every way it needed to.
