the owls are not what they seem
but i digress, there is something very magical about the animation in song of the sea. it does a very wondrous thing by sucking you into and immersing you in a magical otherworldly place in which everything has a splendid beauty to it. everything in this film moves so gracefully and all the animations seem to fit each scenario just right. some of the imagery and animation is just so ravishingly beautiful that it rivals almost any other animated film out there. but there is far more to this film than the technical marvel that it is.
there is a surprising narrative heft and compelling thematic material that lies at the center of this film. for the most part, this film is an understated meditation on loss, love, family, and how that connects to living as a human being. much of the heavy lifting is done by the central relationship between the two siblings. there is so much truth that moves and compels you in how this relationship evolves and changes. i was taken on this journey with these two characters. i felt what they felt and saw what they saw, and in the end, i got the feeling that i had changed along with them. i connected with this relationship and invested in it at a deeper level.i think that is one of the highest compliments that you can give any piece of art.
the only weakness comes in when the film strays a bit from its understated nature to arrive at something that's a bit more goofy. there is enough subtle gags and humor littered throughout that these over the top moments really don't feel like they fit in the film. but it never lingers on these moments too long and returns to that magical and understated tone very quickly.
there are definitely some miyazaki vibes to be found here but moore uses them in a different way. while probably not better, it is at the same level. the narrative arch and heft of this film really make this stand out among animated films of this era.
