This was a real movie of two halves for me. I think the first half of the movie was really great; incredibly tense and packed with moments where you, the audience, are completely unsure of where the Bad Thing is going to come from. Is Bill Skarsgård's Keith a secret psychopath? Is there someone else in the house? Is there a ghost or a demon here?
Weird seeing Georgina Campbell in the lead role; not least because I thought Justin Long was the star of this, at least according to the marketing. But also because I know her primarily from Doctor Who and didn't realize she was popping up in American movies (and tv shows) with a fully-formed American accent.
Good to see Richard "The Night King" Brake here too, in a relatively small but important role. He's been getting a lot of work in the U.S since Game of Thrones finished where he always plays a bad guy of some sort. It's his face, of course. The dude just looks like the type of asshole who would kidnap you in the middle of the night and do terrible things to you, so no wonder he keeps popping as an asshole.
Wasn't so keen on the second half of the movie, if I'm going to be completely honest. I've seen a few people say that it reminded them of an X-Files episode but, for me, it seemed to borrow a lot from 2004's Creep except, where Sean Harris' monster is created through science and lives under London, The Mother is created through incest and lives under just one house. I enjoyed that movie a lot; probably because the monster was allowed to be an evil bastard whereas, here, we're supposed to feel some sympathy toward The Mother which I never did.
And, yeah, that leaping scene is just ridiculous.
Not bad, not great. I would give this three out of five. A solid horror with a strong first half and much weaker back half.
"Pain and loss; they define us as much as happiness or love. Whether it's a world or a relationship, everything has its time and everything ends." - Sarah Jane Smith, Doctor Who
