So there I was—mind: submerged in subconscious, body: laying unconscious—watching Mean Girls (2024).
I cannot recall with whom it was that I watched it with (if anyone at all, for that matter), but I can recall disappointment.
The girls were nowhere near mean enough to justify the title. The meanest one was the eldest sister, who, whilst resembling Courtney Babcock, couldn't salvage this movie's meanness status. She was still too sweet; not bitchy and superficial enough to carry the title's promised unkindness herself.
I recall reading somewhere that this was a musical. That would've been an interesting twist to distinguish this Mean Girls from the original; but alas, no musical numbers were present—besides the "Jingle Bell Rock" scene, which was just lifted from the 2004 Mean Girls (even then, I'm not sure said scene was included in this "remake").
Notice that in the above paragraph, I sandwiched the word "remake" betwixt quotation marks. The reason in me doing this is because I don't earnestly consider this film to be a remake: it was just a family road trip plot—a far cry from the original concept and structure of Mean Girls (2004). It all begets suspicion within me that this script was for an original title, but execs, not having faith in the project, carelessly slapped "Mean Girls" on it to market it as a recognizable IP.
I regard such a move as being discourteous and cheating your audience.
It's a shame, because one given opportunity and talent could've done a lot with a Mean Girls remake; especially considering the the significant increase in relevance the internet has had in the lives on young people since '04. The whole affair truly seems like a myriad of missed opportunities.
After all that's said, I can now only wonder what Mean Girls (2024) is like in waking life...
