this is so incredibly by-the-numbers, not a single frame of it was scary or even thrilling. it's not just predictable as a whole, but even moment-to-moment scenes unfold in your head before they do onscreen, because you- dear viewer, have already seen this movie. or, at the very least, dozens so similar that this feels like a clip-show assembled from their corpses.
exhibit a: the road weary protagonist with a checkered past driving down a dark country road, when he/she reaches for a bottle (of booze!) that's fallen to the floor of the car. the moment they retrieve said bottle, and lay eyes on the road again- jump scare! there's someone standing in the middle of the road! swerve off the road, music flares, aaaaand... scene.
some of star jeffrey dean morgan's natural god-given charisma escapes the droll trappings of this would-be thriller and makes you forget you're watching a boring movie for a moment, but it's never enough to save it entirely. even his young co-star, cricket brown seems like a promising talent- it's a shame then, that the movie never gives her much to actually do aside from her best chloë grace moretz impression.
in fact, the biggest shock i had was from google, discovering that brown and moretz are actually the same age. and here i was, all set to dole out some wit about how hollywood seems to always conjure this specific kind of face for roles just like this and cricket brown is the newest model. dakota fanning walked so that- et cetera, et cetera. but no, cricket is the same age as moretz, and seems talented enough- i'd love to see her in some better movies.
not even cary elwes and william sadler can do anything to elevate the material. sad, because in the tiniest of moments i could definitely envision a good movie cut from the same cloth. genuine thrills are as scarce here as an authentic miracle. best to look for your supernatural thrills elsewhere.
